Within the borders of today's North Macedonia, Muslims constituted approximately 40% of the population at the end of the 19th century. The Muslim population consisted of almost 40% Turkish and 40% Albanian Muslims. In the remaining part, there were mostly Bulgarian/Macedonian Muslims (Torbesh), and a smaller minority of Caucasian immigrants and Roma (Gypsy) Muslims.
