Cultural Structure & Sub-Identity in Afyon
Categories: Turkey - provinces
There are complex structures even in the provinces you thought were the most flat.
* The old settled agricultural people, sometimes called Manav, whom we call "Natives".
* Yoruks are the nomadic people of the 'Old Ottoman' land who live on animal husbandry. They were forcibly settled after the Tanzimat.
* Turkmens are nomads who came from Maraş-Urfa-Aleppo since the late 15th century.
* Karabakh people are Sunni Azeris who took refuge in the Ottoman Empire during the Shah Abbas wars in the 17th century.
* Caucasians: Circassians and Abkhazians who migrated after 1864 and 1878.
* Tatars and Nogais migrated from the area between Crimea and the Danube at roughly the same time as the Circassians.
* The term Muhajir refers to those who came from the Balkans after 1878 or in the 20th century.
